Abstract: Kenya is one of the most active African countries on social media with 7.1 million and one million active monthly users on Facebook and Twitter respectively (Bloggers Association of Kenya, 2018). Kenyan churches have thus increased their social media activity, which has impacted their reputation and relevance online. This thesis sought to understand the dynamics of framing social media communication by Kenyan churches using Infinite Fellowship Ministries (INFEMI) as a case. A mixed methods design was adopted using interviews and questionnaires and the findings revealed that framing in INFEMI is an active, collaborative effort between INFEMI’s leadership and their scribes. It is affected by factors such as INFEMI’s vision, volunteer numbers, technology costs and negative publicity received by Kenyan churches online. It emerged that both INFEMI’s leadership and members are more concerned about the church fulfilling its evangelism mandate and upholding its integrity as a Christian organization than any negative publicity it could receive on social media. This shared view has given INFEMI a favourable reputation with 51.79% of its members who gave it positive reviews and 30.36% who had mixed reviews including positive ones. However, there is room for the church to grow in expansion of content formats for framed messages, reach and interaction with its external public. One of the key recommendations made was for INFEMI to consider the creation and adoption of a tangible social media policy to better meet their communication goals. This is also an area that could benefit from further academic research as the corporate use of social media by Kenyan churches has room for more exploration. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which various communication sources influenced compliance to the full dose of 90+ days of iron and folic acid supplementation among women aged 15to49 years during pregnancy in Mukuru Kwa Njenga informal settlements in Nairobi County. The objectives of the study were to assess the communication sources on IFAS for pregnant women aged between 15and 49, determine the extent of compliance behavior to IFAS of pregnant women aged between 15and 49, and assess the influence of communication sources on compliance to iron and folic acid supplementation during pregnancy. The study used two theories: the Transtheoretical Model and Diffusion of Innovation. Both Diffusion of Innovation and Transtheoretical Model assume that a person goes through multiple stages before successfully changing their behavior. The study adopted a descriptive cross-sectional survey design to assess how communication, had influenced compliance to iron and folic acid supplementation among pregnant women in Mukuru Kwa Njenga. Three hundred and four women of aged 15-49 meeting the inclusion criteria were the minimum sample as determined using the Fischer’s formula. The response rate as calculated from the complete questionnaires was 97.3%. Interpersonal communication (health providers, friends, and relatives) and mass media (radio and television) ranked highly as the sources of general communication frequently used at 96.96%, 92.91% ,80.07% and 71.96% respectively. The results showed that 87.50% of the respondent had received IFAS across the gestational age categories either freely or by buying. The study recommends that print and display media should be given adequate importance. Further studies on frequency and duration of exposure to IFAS messages can be conducted to establish cause effect of the communication channels on adherence Description: MASTER OF ARTS in Communication URI: http://repository.daystar.ac.ke/xmlui/handle/123456789/3838 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Violent conflicts contribute to the deaths of millions of individuals in the world annually. In Kenya, the pastoralist communities in the country report several incidences of violence mainly caused by inadequate resources. Notably, Baragoi Sub-County is affected by frequent inter-ethnic conflicts, which impact the region's development and security. The study sought to determine whether restorative justice as a conflict resolution mechanism can help to resolve the inter-ethnic conflicts in Baragoi Sub-County. Three specific objectives guided the study; to analyze the causes of conflict in Baragoi Sub-County, examine the past interventions used to solve the conflict in the area, and explore the feasibility of restorative justice in resolving inter-ethnic conflicts in this region. Data was collected qualitatively utilizing data collection instruments such as guides for Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), interview guides, and observation checklists with a sample of 79 individuals obtained through a combination of non-probability sampling and stratified sampling techniques. The study's findings revealed that conflict in the area is caused by a combination of factors such as scarce resources, cultural factors, and the infiltration of illegal arms. However, the past interventions, which were top-bottom in nature, had not effectively resolved the conflict. Therefore, while restorative justice may work in Baragoi Sub-County, it would be difficult to fully implement the tenets of restorative justice due to the bitterness harbored by the two communities. Hence, the study recommends contextualizing the pillars of restorative justice to foster healing and restoration instead of labeling the communities as either victims or offenders. Abstract: The recent increase in uncertainty and job insecurity in the hospitality industry has had adverse effects on the level of employee engagement. Hotels need to identify effective employee engagement practices to harness staff potential to compete effectively. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of employee engagement practices on organization competitiveness in four-star hotels in Kenya. The objectives of the study were to establish the employee engagement practices observed in four-star hotels, evaluate the level of organization competitiveness in four-star hotels, and determine the effect of employee engagement practices on organization competitiveness. This study was anchored on the resource-based view theory. Descriptive research design was used. The population of the study was 63 four-star hotels, and the target population was 19 four-star hotels dispersed across 6 geographical regions in the country. The study had a sample size of 57 respondents conveniently selected. A response rate of 89.5% was obtained. Secondary data was sought from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics to assess competitiveness of the four-star hotels in the market. Data was collected through an electronically disbursed questionnaire and analysed through the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 28. The findings showed that the four employee engagement practices studied were applied widely in the hotels with each having an affirmative rate of greater than 75%. Four-star hotels in five of the six regions were performing more competitively than their rivals, with market penetration indices greater than a hundred. The findings also indicated that the employee engagement practices studied explained 59.6% of the variance of organization competitiveness. One of the recommendations of the study was that to be more competitive, hotels need to heighten employees’ innovation orientation through empowering job designs, effective training, and development programs. Abstract: This study sought to assess whether the internal corporate communication practices in an organization impact customer satisfaction. The objectives were to identify the active forms and channels of internal corporate communication at Greenlight Planet Kenya, identify the effectiveness of internal corporate communication practices, determine the influence of internal corporate communication on customer satisfaction levels, and assess the intervening influence of customer centricity on the relationship between internal corporate communication and customer satisfaction at Greenlight Planet Kenya. The social exchange theory fronted by Poole (1994) anchored the study. The study utilized two pools of samples where a sample of 110 respondents comprising employees of Greenlight Planet Kenya was selected through stratified random sampling and simple random sampling. Further, convenience sampling was utilized to select a pool of 120 external customers from Greenlight Planet Kenya, an organization in Kenya's Solar Energy sector. Descriptive research design was employed with online questionnaires and in-depth phone interviews used as the key data collection tools. The data analysis was done using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 21. The study findings showed that internal corporate communication was positively and significantly correlated with customer satisfaction with r=.537. The regression model summary indicated that internal corporate communication, acting on its own, depicted only 28.9% of customer satisfaction, with a statistically significant R2=.289. The study, therefore, concluded that internal corporate communication significantly impacted customer satisfaction levels. The study recommends that organizations invest in and ensure that their internal corporate communication is effective and efficient to impact their customer satisfaction levels. Further, customer-centricity needs to be adopted and embedded in all corporate cultures to ensure better results in customer satisfaction. Abstract: Guided by Aaron Beck’s cognitive behavior theory and Susan Knell’s cognitive behavioral play therapy (CBPT), this study investigated the effect of CBPT on gender symptomatology of anxiety disorders (ADs) among children in two selected primary schools in Dagoretti Sub-County, Nairobi County. Both correlational and quasi-experimental study designs were utilized. The study used four questionnaires: the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED), the Fear Survey Schedule for Children and Adolescents-Revised (FSSC-R), the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), and the Child Social Demographic Questionnaire (CSDQ). Respondents (n=163; n females =94) were derived from two public day primary schools in Dagoretti Sub-County, Nairobi County: Kawangware and Kabiria. Through purposive sampling, 28 children diagnosed with ADs from Kabiria Primary School were assigned to treatment, while 28 from Kawangware Primary School were assigned to the control group. The treatment arm received 12 sessions of CBPT. Data was collected again at mid line and end line for both arms and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 20. Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson-Chi-square, the paired samples t-test, and the independent samples t-test were utilized in data analysis. Overall, the prevalence of ADs was 79.1%, where females had statistically significant higher means in ADs (p=0.004) and fears (p=0.008) than the males. All the respondents (100%) from the one-parent and no-parent family backgrounds and the sexual abuse categories had homotypic comorbidities. Both genders benefited from CBPT as per the independent t-test (p˃.05), though according to the samples t-test, females had greater symptom alleviation (p = 0.000). Based on the findings, gender sensitivity in assessments and intervention is recommended for children displaying ADs Description: Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology URI: http://repository.daystar.ac.ke/xmlui/handle/123456789/3824 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Vulnerability in children implies exposure to situations hindering their development like deprivation, exploitation, abuse, neglect, violence, and disease. Towards alleviating vulnerability, numerous initiatives have endeavored to enhance service delivery to Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC). Compassion International is one such initiative uplifting the lives of vulnerable children through creating Child Development Center (CDC). This study sought to establish the role community-based programs play in empowering OVC in Kenya with Mathare CDC in Nairobi County as a case study. Objectives guiding this study were to establish the socio-economic needs of OVC, analyze criteria used in identifying OVC, analyze challenges facing programs, and assess the role of CDC in empowering OVC. The study adopted a descriptive survey design involving a sample of 120 alumni and 10 staff from Mathare CDC. Purposive sampling was used to select alumni, while census was used to select key informants. Questionnaires and an interview guide were administered, and data analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 25. The study found that Mathare CDC adopts a holistic development approach. Vulnerable children in the community were identified through CDC workers, referrals, or parents/guardians. A major challenge facing the CDC is limited financial resources. Nonetheless, the CDC has positively impacted the alumni through education, better healthcare, nutrition, positive behaviour change, spiritual growth, life skills, and talent development. The study recommends enhancing fundraising strategies to increase resource base and considering self-sustainable options to ease overdependence on donors. Support from beneficiaries, parents, and the larger community is paramount in the success of community-based initiatives. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of an organization’s reputation on employees, shareholders, and trustees as internal stakeholders of small and medium sized organizations in Kenya. The study specifically aimed at determining the effects of organizational leadership on internal stakeholders, assessing the effects of staff relationships on internal stakeholders, and examining the effects of communication strategies on internal stakeholders. The study was anchored on the stakeholder theory propounded by Edward Freeman in 1984 and used a descriptive survey research design. In particular, the researcher targeted 90 employees, 36 trustees, and 72 shareholders from Uwezo, Daraja, and Remu microfinance banks. A sample size of 66 comprising 30 employees, 12 trustees, and 24 shareholders was selected through stratified and simple random sampling techniques. Questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data. Since the instruments yielded both qualitative and quantitative data, analysis was done quantitatively from structured questions and qualitatively from unstructured questions. Quantitative data was entered into a secure database for analysis by use of the Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences (SPSS) to yield descriptive information in form of percentages that were presented in tables. The qualitative data was analyzed thematically and presented in themes based on the objectives of the study. The findings revealed that reputation of microfinance institutions indicated through leadership, staff relationships and communication strategies had both negative and positive effects on performance and retention of employees, willingness to invest among shareholders and promotion of service delivery among trustees. The study recommends that communication strategies be redesigned for responsive exchange of information internally. Abstract: Funding with debt or equity is considered when a firm is seeking a diversification strategy. However, capital structure decisions are a puzzle in finance. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of diversification strategy on the capital structure of listed commercial and services firms at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE). The study sought to achieve the following objectives: to determine the extent to which listed commercial and services firms at the NSE have implemented diversification strategy, establish the level of debt in relation to equity in the capital structure of listed commercial and services firms at the NSE, and examine the effect of diversification strategy on the capital structure of listed commercial and services firms at the NSE. The study was anchored on coinsurance effect, transaction cost, pecking order, and resource-based view (RBV) theories. This study used a longitudinal descriptive research design. A census study was conducted on the 11 commercial and services firms listed on the NSE. Secondary data was collected for the period 2011 to 2020 and analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics using EVIEWS 11. To validate the results, regression diagnostic tests were carried out. A robust regression analysis was then conducted to remedy heteroscedasticity violation. The results showed that concentric and conglomerate diversification strategies had a weak negative and significant effect on capital structure, that is, (β=-0.3667, p=0.0010), (r=-0.1458), and (β= 0.9210, p=0.0001), (r= 0.1309), respectively, whereas geographical diversification had a weak negative and significant effect, that is, (β=-0.3064, p=0.0019) and (r=-0.0852). From these findings, the study recommends that managers of commercial and services firms invest in research and development and come up with relevant diversification strategies that match their capital structure needs.
